9 West 57th Street
and other skyscrapers in NYC

9 West 57th Street
Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Gordon Bunshaft as chief designer
Developer: Sheldon Solow
Location: 9 West 57th Street,
Date: 1974
Style: International Style
Type: Office Building
It is the 50-story 221-m building and has interesting design. The buliding has been called the “bellbottom.” The building slopes (like a ski jump) at the bottom. 9 West 57th Street has spectacular views and large floors and impressive quality commanded very high rentals despite its "bell-bottom" epithets. While its sloping north and facades draws jeers and gasps, its east and west facades are superb with large exposed crossed supports, shown at the left, contained within a recessed bay, one of the city's rare "high-tech" exposures.
